Stephen Nowicki has dedicated his career both to the study of animal communication and to the improvement of science education at many levels. In his renovation of the undergraduate biology program at Duke University, Nowicki emphasized concept-based learning, small-group activities, and real world applications. He has incorporated many of these same elements into Biology, a new high school biology program published by McDougal Littell in 2007. Nowicki’s attention to broad themes has resulted in connections that unite various aspects of biology throughout the text. His work has helped to create a program that is both engaging and relevant to today’s students.
