Sometimes it seems difficult to comprehend that DNA was not known to be the genetic material until 1952. The rate at which advancements have been made in biology over the last fifty years is breathtaking. But that rate continues to accelerate. The completion of the first phase of the Human Genome Project has generated a vast amount of data. This project has helped demonstrate the need for greater collaboration among scientists to make sense of all this information. As scientists continue their investigations, exciting discoveries and new ways of seeing the world will emerge. Many of these discoveries will have the potential to affect our environment, our society, and our own health and decisions in significant ways. Let us take advantage of our ready access to information to learn about this emerging body of knowledge.
